Skills of a Grandma

Did you know that there are some older and younger adults that don’t know how to count money? I was at HyVee the other day and my total came to $18.62. I gave the young lady a $20 bill and then said I have 2 cents.

Well she had already put the numbers in the register, so she looked at me (as if to say “now what”), I asked her do you know how to count money back? She said “sure if this thing tells me what to give you,” I told her that the school system is failing to teach you real math. But then told her “you owe me $1 dollar and 40 cents. She then said “are you sure?” The lady behind me said “yes she is sure, If you don’t know how to count why would we lie.”

I don’t know about you but its not hard to count money back to a person. I know that I am not good in math, I had to get pencil and paper out to get the answer.When teacher asked to show your work or do long division, no problem for me, that was easy.

Money counting is easy. I only had general math 3 times, (my dad was in the Air Force and when we moved math was either ahead or behind me.) But money was easy if you gave me a chance to count it back to you.

Now my kids can do math in their head and spit out the answer before I can find a pencil or paper. They have their dads skills in that department. They can measure and even look at a screw or bolt and tell ya what size, and if not right …..its cotton pickin close.
